- Born Jan. 20, 1809 in Albany Co., NY
- He came to Michigan from New York with his family via the Erie Canal in 1837
- He enlisted in Company H of the 1st Infantry on April 20, 1862 at Ypsilanti , Michigan for 3 months service under the name Louis Spawn at the stated age of 40. He took the muster oath on May 1, 1861. He was mustered out at Detroit, Michigan on August 7, 1861.

- He was wounded in the First Battle of Manassas. While home on leave, this photo was taken.
- On September 12, 1861 at Belleville, Michigan he re-enlisted in Company G of the 1st Infantry as a Corporal for 3 years of service under the name Lewis Spawn. He took the muster oath on September 16, 1861.
- He was killed at the Second Battle of Mannassas on August 30, 1862. He is buried on the field at Bull Run, VA, but he has a monument in Soop Cemetary, Van Buron Twp., Mich.
- Read his letter home 2 months before he was killed in action.
